new, 2nd generation Yamaha YTR-8310ZII Bobby Shew Professional Trumpet in Gold Lacquer with a yellow brass bell.
From Yamaha:
Having made its debut in 2001, the original Custom Z was borne out of the company’s long and close partnership with legendary trumpet player Bobby Shew, who has been a Yamaha artist since 1992. An exceptionally versatile player, Shew wanted to create one super-efficient instrument that could alternatively scream out a powerful lead, or play soft, mellow ballads. The result of this collaboration was a hugely popular, world-class instrument—the YTR-8310Z—one that is lightweight, has a brilliant sound, and incorporates a step-bore design to maximize efficiency and comfortable resistance for live music.
While maintaining many of the design features that made the original Custom Z trumpet so unique, the new YTR-8310ZII has an updated leadpipe and a precise valve casing design. These modifications combine to offer unprecedented tonal richness and depth, while maintaining maximum efficiency and comfortable resistance for players in any setting and genre—from the jazz club stage to the recording studio.
Notes Shew: “I’ve been playing the original Z for a long time, but after a busy day of playing the new 8310Z, I was amazed. It speaks easily with little effort and fills the room with sound. Thanks, Yamaha—a wonderful step forward!”
“There is an incredible efficiency to the Custom Z trumpet that is unrivaled by the competition,” adds Brian Petterson, marketing manager, Yamaha Winds, Yamaha Corporation of America. “One hallmark of Yamaha research and development is that it never stops, and the popularity of the Custom Z is a testament to our company’s relentless desire to work closely with top artists to improve our instruments.”
The original Custom Z was born of Yamaha’s long and close partnership with legendary trumpet player Bobby Shew. In 2018, Yamaha and Bobby collaborated to create a second-generation YTR-8310Z that further refines the brilliant tone and well-balanced playing resistance that contemporary styles demand. Bobby needed one versatile, efficient instrument that can wail out powerful lead lines and also play soft, mellow ballads with the musical nuance that Bobby is known for. Yamaha has developed the new Custom Z to satisfy all of Bobby’s playing requirements while retaining the highest level of precision and consistency.
In order to produce the powerful, well-defined tone that today’s jazz players demand, the conventional one-piece valve casing has been replaced with a two-piece design. This refinement adds depth and core to the instrument’s tone while also balancing the playing resistance.
A one-piece yellow-brass bell plays an important role in achieving a brilliant tone and outstanding projection. The bell also features a side seam that passes through the points where tubing braces dampen vibration, for more open resonance.
Unlike traditional methods that produce a round bell rim, the more advanced French bead technique results in a flat-dome rim shape that enhances feedback to the performer.
This Jazz mouthpiece has a fairly deep, roomy cup for big, warm sound. The throat and backbore are designed to provide enough “jump and snap” to nimbly maneuver through quick jazz passages with rich, full tone.
The new Z comes with the stylish TRC-810E double case with backpack straps, a shoulder strap and a Custom Z keychain.
